Notes from the Room; Taking the Next Step

Don’t be so hard on yourself when you feel like you still don’t know where you’re headed. Clinically, seasons of uncertainty are often part of identity formation, not a sign that something is wrong. The mind naturally wants clarity because uncertainty activates discomfort in the nervous system, but not every chapter of life is meant to be fully defined while you are still in it.

When there’s pressure to “figure it all out,” the brain can slip into overthinking, comparison, and self-criticism. What feels like confusion is often an in-between space where old ways of being no longer fit, but the new version of you is still unfolding.

One tool that helps is focusing on the “next right step” instead of the whole future. Ask yourself: What is one small thing I can do today that supports my well-being, peace, or direction? Resting, creating, praying, sending the email, or taking a walk all count.

This approach works because it calms the nervous system. Instead of overwhelming yourself with the entire path, you return to what is actually in your control today. Direction is rarely found in pressure; it’s revealed through consistent, gentle movement.

If you feel like you need support in this process, you can book a discovery call to explore what this season looks like for you and how to move through it with more clarity and grounding.
